From The President

Economics is all around us!

So, Carlos Zambrano is making more money than you make?  Well, don’t feel bad - his five-year, $95 million contract is larger than the combined GDP of the 5 smallest economies in the world!  Now, there’s a lesson on the market at work for your students!

Economics is all around us, and using current events can be a terrific way to interest your students in the basic concepts that rule our economic life.  Much of Illinois dealt with major flooding in recent weeks – what an opportunity for a lesson on public vs. private goods and services; or on productivity (the impact of one lost work day); or on negative externalities (impact on the environment of economic activities).

There are a multitude of opportunities to teach your students basic economics through the events happening in their world.  Take time this year to seize the opportunity to enrich your classroom and excite your students through economics in every day life.  Your local Center/Office for Economic Education offers workshops or courses to help you turn your classroom into a place where students learn for life by learning from life.

New Faces

The Illinois Council on Economic Education has new faces in the office.  Nancy Overton joined the staff as Administrative Secretary at the beginning of September.  She replaces JoAnn Opstad, who has moved to another office on campus.  Also joining Nancy and Jodi Long on our secretarial staff is Tayler Winton-Sorto, who will likely be the first voice you hear when you call the ICEE office.

The American Dream

Board members and friends – mark you calendars!  ICEE will host The American Dream dinner on Thursday, April 24, 2008 at the Art Institute of Chicago.  Plan now to invite colleagues and to purchase a table or be a major sponsor of this exciting event to raise awareness of the need for economic and financial literacy education in our schools.  Come celebrate with us!
