Winners, Spring 2009

Statewide, over 17,000 students participated during Spring 2009. The online portfolio simulation for student teams extended from February 2 - April 24 for schools in the City of Chicago; January 12 - April 24 for schools elsewhere. The Enrichment Session, for any Illinois school, extended March 16 - May 22. New this year was a "Late Spring Open Session" for any Illinois school, running February 17 - April 24.

In addition to the Spring sessions, students whose teachers enrolled them in the Year-Long session which started in the fall, continued to manage their portfolios through April 24.

In any session, students begin portfolio management when it best fit the teacher's schedule, within the timeframe of their session.

Cabrera Statewide Award, 2008-2009 Results

Cabrera Statewide Award Winners. Eligible teams competed in one of six fall and spring sessions. This competition did not include the Year-Long, Midyear (Nov-Feb) or Enrichment (Mar-May) sessions.

    West Chicago Community High School team wins the Cabrera Statewide Award, High School
  • High School Winner: West Chicago Community High School, Donald Zabelin, teacher. In the final week of their session, this team skyrocketed to $193,804 in equity, 88.86% over the S&P 500 for the same time period. The team was competing in the Spring Open session, running January - April. They won first place in the "Suburban High School Region" within that session.
  • Runner up of note is Mascoutah High School, Kathy Clark, teacher. The team rallied to $190,317 in the final days of the session. They returned above the S&P 500 by 80.55%. The exceptional team won first place in the Grades 9-12 division of the Late Spring Session which ran February - April.
  • St John Fisher School receives the Elementay level Cabrera Statewide Award
  • Elementary Winner: St John Fisher School, Chicago. Teacher is Patricia Reed. The team finished with $168,276 in equity, and returned 63.33% over the S&P 500 for the same time period. This team won the "Bulls Division, Grades 4-8 Region" for the City of Chicago session which ran February - April.
  • Elementary runner-up of note is Simmons Middle School, Aurora, with $165,884 in equity. They finished above the S&P 500 by 66.35%. The teacher is Scott Dillard.This team won first place in the "Prairie State Grades 4-8 Region" of the Spring Open Session running January - April.

National Capitol Hill Challenge Results

Seven hundred nineteen teams from across the U.S. competed on behalf of their U.S. Representative, in the 2009 Capitol Hill Challenge. View the results of the Illinois teams who participated.

Teams participate by invitation, once their U.S. Representative agreed to participate in the annual program. The single winning team receives a trip to Washington D.C. to meet with their sponsoring member of Congress.
